A man with Puritan faith, he brought his family to New England about 1638. Living first in Roxbury, Mass. then moving to Springfield in 1642 as one of the founders of that city then called Agawam. He served his town in many capacities including Selectman, Auditor and Magistrate and he was Deacon of the church for some 25 years. Next to the Public Library in Springfield there is a bronze statue, 'The Puritan', placed there 24 Nov 2020 which honors him. It is the sculptor's idea of how such a man as Deacon Chapin, a man of his moral standing and spiritual qualities ought to have looked. He was a soldier and was sent to command a squad of men, among whom was his brother Thomas, who was a builder or carpenter, to build a fort or blockhouse at Quabaug (Brookfield), starting Sept. 16, 1688. It was called Gilbert's Fort, perhaps because he took a house lot and lived adjoining it on the west, on the south side of the road. The fort was on the (later) schoolhouse lot in Brookfield, at the intersection of North Main and Maple Streets, of convenient size, having barracks for soldiers and their families and was surrounded by a stockade. It was a defense against Indian attacks from the northward, northwestward and northeastward. Fox, 80 of Wichita for the past 22 years, died at his home Tuesday, following a stroke of paralysis suffered last Friday. Mr. Fox had suffered two light strokes during the past three years, but his condition was not considered serious until the third stroke Friday. He was conscious up until a short time before his death. Mr. Fox was born in Raymondville, N.Y., March 12, 1851, and moved to Wichita in 1904. For 15 years he had been sidewalk and pavement inspector for the city, and was known as one of the most careful and painstaking employees the city ever had. 'Work had to come up to specifications,' old time employees of the city, men who had worked with Mr. Fox, said yesterday. He was a member of the Friends church and a member of Masonic lodge No.99, A.F.&A.M. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Fox, and three sons, Norman G. Fox, of Tulos, La., C. Raymond Fox of Tucson, Ariz., and J. Leslie Fox of Wichita, manager of radio station KFH.
