Descendants of Richard Faulk
The report was generated with The Master Genealogist (Gold Version) which I personally recommend for proper genealogical collection and publication purposes. Generation One 1. Richard1 Faulk; born in England; married Elizabeth (--?--) in Virginia; died 1712/13 in Chowan County, North Carolina. The lineage from Richard Faulk to Jonathon Faulk is still being researched. The information here is not presented as final nor confirmed. Much of the detailed information on the Faulks comes from Charles B. Schweizer (CBS), an expert on the Faulk surname in America. As I owe Charles a huge debt for providing such detail I will provide as much of the detail he provided as appropriate on They Live Again. ABOUT CHARLES SCHWEIZER Charles Benjamin Schweizer (CBS) was born 18 May 2020 in Maplewood, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri. His Father was Charles William Schweizer and this family has been proven to 1620 when Johann Jacob Schweizer lived in modern Oetlingen bei Kirchheim Tech south of Stuttgart Germany. His Mother was Alice Kendrick Faulk, daughter of Lorenzo Kendrick Faulk 1861 Alabama-1886 Texas, granddaughter of Lorenzo Faulk 1809 South Caro;ina-1861 Alabama, great grandaughter of James Faulk 1786 North Carolina-1851 Alabama. CBS THINKS James was the son of William Faulk abt 1760 North Carolina - about 1810 North Carolina who CBS THINKS was the son of John Faulk Sr and his second wife abt 1704 Virginia-1780 North Carolina who was a son of Richard Faulk who CBS believes arrived in Yorktown, Virginia from England in 1686. Charles Benjamin Schweizer lived in Maplewood and Kirkwood Missouri until 1929 when the family moved to Vucksburg Mississippi. He was graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1931, from Louisiana State University in 1936 with a BS in CE, and from the Unioversity of California in 1947 with a MS in CE. Upon grafuation from LSU he was comissioned in the United States Army and retired in 1966 with thirty years service of which fourteen years was a Colonel of the Corps of Engineers. He is a graduate of the 1951 Class of the Command and General Staff College and the 1961 Army War College. He served as Executive Officer of the 78th Engineer Regiment in Puerto Rico, OIC of the Engineer Maintenance and Supply School at Granite City, various positions of responsibility at the Hanau Engineer Depot in Grossauheim, Germany, Director of the Atomic Weapons Department at CGSC, Commander of the 36th Engineer Combat Group in Korea, District Engineer of the St Louis Army Engineer District, Deputy Chief of Staff of the US Army Logistics Command in Orleans France and as Commander of the Granite City Army Engineer Depot in Granite City IL. After retiring from thre Army he organized and was the Executive Director of the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville IL Foundation. He now lives at 1891 Prestonwood dr, Edwardsville Il 62025-4136, Tp 618.659.0736, FAX 618.659.0899, e-mail cbschweizer@iw.edwpub.com Charles Benjamin Schweizer married a Kirkwood High School classmate, Eleanor Noxon of Webster Groves MO, on 7 June 1941. They have a daughter Dorothy Anne van Giessen, a son Charles W Schweizer and a daughter Elizabeth Kendrick Saunders and in 2001 nine grandchildren and two great granddaughters. He is a member of the Episcopal Church, twice Master of Benjamin Franklin Lodge #52 of the French National Grand Lodge of Free Masons in Oleans France of which he is an honoary Junior Grand Warden and a Member of the Sons of the American Revolution of which he was President of the Illinois Society, Vice President General of the Great Lakes District and a recipient of the SAR Minute Man Award. He is a member of the General Society of the War of 1812 and Senior Vice President of the Illinois Society. Charles Benjamin Schweizer helped his Mother who was living in a retirment home in 1968 research her Faulk family. He became so interested in the Faulk family he has spent much of his spare time since then traveling all through the South, interviewing hundreds of people, wading throuh innumerable cemeteries, probing records in county courthouses and searching histories and census records in libaries. He has assembled records on over 40,000 Faulk and Faulk descendants. He has been furnished information by hundreds of people and has acknowledged their participation in the appropriate places. Any misinforamtion is because of information received, errors in reading records and in entering data into the computer. As of 2001 he is attemptong to place his records in Family Tree Computer software so it can be available without charge to any one. Charles B. Schweizer has requested that anyone needing information may contact him at 891 Prestonwood Drive, Edwardsville, IL 62025-4136 or email at: cbschweizer@iw.edwpub.com or phone at (618) 659-0736 / Fax (618) 659-0899. OUR FIRST FAULK IN AMERICA A Richard Foulk arrived by ship at Yorktown VA in 1688. In 1704 a Richard Folk owned 100 acres of land in Nansemond Co., VA. A Richard Falk/Faulk owned land on the north side of the Meherrin River in Chowan Co NC between 1710 and 1720. His will is recorded in Chowan Co NC Will Book --- with wife Elizabeth and sons John, William, Richard Jr and Jonathan. CBS thinks this these Richard Foulks/Folks/Faulks are the same person and the progeniture of our Faulk line. OUR FAULK FAMILY HISTORY Foulk/Folk/Faulk is an uncommon name in Europe but does exist in France and Germany in the Rhine River valley as well as in Sweden. People with this name came from these countries as well as England and it has even been thought they came from Peru. CBS thinks our Faulk family left the Rhine River valley for religious or economic reasons and moved to England as many people were doing at that time. England couldn't support so many refugees and moved them on to America, the Land of Opportunity. People landing in Virginia moved into Kentucky and North Carolina. From there they moved to Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana. Some Faulks moved to Florida after the French and Indian War and left Florida when the Spanish regained ownership after the Revolutionary War. People landing in Philadelphia and New York moved west across Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The two paths of immigration combined in Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas before moving further west. There has been talk of the Faulks being Huguenot Refugees but the Huguenot Society has no record of our Faulk line. Of course the land warrants given Revolutionary War veterans spurred the movement to the west. There were two other important reasons. One was the large number of children born to each family. The normal family size was ten children, one Faulk male allegedly sired 33 in all, thanks to three wives. Children had to move in order to have sufficient land for food. The other reason was that a volcanic explosion on the Island of Tambora in modern Indonesia south of Bali occurred in 1815. A crater several miles in diameter was created when this volcano exploded throwing so much dust into the air that the area from South Carolina north was dark for several years. There was no sun and it was very cold. nothing would grow so as many people as could moved south. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING RICHARD FAULK SUPPLIED BY HENNY CARLISLE The following information is sincerely appreciated and supplied by Henny Carlisle. Henny may be reached at LCARLISLE1@nc.rr.com Per Col. Charles B. Schweizer - Gen Forum Faulk on 29 Apr, 2000 Message #326. Richard Faulk lived on the Meherrin River in where the VA/NC line is abt 1710 with sons John, William and Jonathan..

In Volume 10 (1687-1691) Carlisle finds a reference to our Richard Foulke in York Co. Quote: "A certificate according to Act is granted to Capt. Francis Page for the importation of several persons: Willm. Barker, Ben.Lucas, Robt. Case, James Brown, Jane Palmer, Jane Pepper, Alice Cockin, Willm. Cockin, Nathll. He paid tax on 100 acres of land in Nansemond Co, Va in 1704 and later moved to Chowan (Hertford) Co., NC., where he died about 1712/13. This area, which probably is now Suffolk township, was settled primarily by French Huguenots. Wayne Johnson feels sure that Richard was a Huguenot and this could tie in with the family story that the Faulks "are German" and the various mentions of Faulks (any spelling) in the area West of the Rhine River. (Now the Alsace-Lorraine,which has been over the history alternately French and German.) Note by Henny Carlisle: Perusal of the abstract of the Nansemond Tax and Rent Roll show very few French names. It may be that the Huguenots changed their name during their stay in England.
THE WILL OF RICHARD FAULK Furnished by Henny Carlisle. His will as recorded in Hathaway's Register and also in Abstract of North Carolina Wills (SS 875/27- NC Carolina Archives) names sons: William, Richard, John and Jonathan, and unnamed daughers and wife Elizabeth. From "Abstracts of Will 1690-1760", Richard Falk, Chowan Precinct, March 15 --- No Probate, original Missing, Recorded in Secr. of State NC Book 1712-1722 Page 27 In the name of God Amen. Children of Richard1 Faulk and Elizabeth (--?--) were as follows:
Generation Two 2. John2 Faulk Sr. (Richard1); born circa 1710 in Nansemond County, North Carolina; married Mary (--?--) in North Carolina; died circa 1780 in Johnston County, North Carolina; buried in Old Beulah Church Cemetery, Johnston County, North Carolina. Records in North Carolina Archives as well as the respective North Carolina counties show that William and John Faulk purchased land south of the Tar River downstream from the present Rocky Mount NC in 1740. There is no question in CBS' mind that these two are brothers and the same men. John Faulk known as John Faulk Sr moved about the area as documented in various Edgecombe and Johnston County records but in 1764 he purchased land on both sides of Little River about a mile above the point where today Iinterstate 95 crosses the Little River. He built a bridge across Little River known as Faulk's bridge, probably a toll bridge. It was still shown on the USGA map of 1904. A concrete bridge crosses the river at this point today but it appears that a bridge once existed just south of the concrete bridge. In 1769 he gave the land he owned north of Little River to his beloved son Thomas and in 1780 according to the Johnston County deed book index (the deed book is missing) gave the land south of the Little River to William Faulk. CBS THINKS this William Faulk is the same man who moved to the present Fair Bluff NC area about 1784 and is the father of James Faulk, CBS' great great great grabdfather. John Faulk Sr dies about 1780 and must be buried in the old Beulah Church cemetery. Children of John2 Faulk Sr. and Mary (--?--) were as follows:
Generation Three 6. John3 Faulk Jr. (John2, Richard1); born circa 1734 in Chowan County, North Carolina; married Jenny/Jane (--?--); died Apr 1, 2021 in Edgefield County, South Carolina; buried in South Carolina. Children of John3 Faulk Jr. and Jenny/Jane (--?--) were as follows:
7. William3 Faulk (John2, Richard1); born circa 1760 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina; married Sarah (--?--) circa 1780 in Johnston County, North Carolina; married Rachael Futeral circa 1800 in Fair Bluffs, Bladen County, North Carolina; died circa 1810 in Columbus County, North Carolina. Children of William3 Faulk and Sarah (--?--) were: There were no children of William3 Faulk and Rachael Futeral. Generation Four 10. Jonathan4 Faulk (John3, John2, Richard1); born 1762 in North Carolina; married Phoebe Tillman, daughter of Gideon Tillman, circa 1783 in probably Bladen County, North Carolina; died Aug 23, 2020 in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana; buried in Faulk Cemetery, west bank of of the Black River, Catahoula Parish, Louisiana. CHARLES SCHWEIZER'S THOUGHTS ABOUT JONATHAN FAULK Before 1800 most records are pretty spotty, some are excellent and some are just pieces here and there. This Jonathan Faulk fits the latter case. He first appears as a Loyalist (CBS neveer uses Tory) soldier in "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War" by Murtie June Clark, Genealogical Publishing Co, 1981. A John Faulk/Folk also is in that list. CBS has proof this John Faulk moved to Edgefield Co., SC in 1777 from Dobbs/Wayne Co. NC because this John's sale of his land is Deed #1 in Wayne Co., NC Deed Book. So CBS believes Jonathan was a son of this John Faulk known as John Faulk Jr in Dobbs Co., NC and as John Faulk Sr in Edgefield Co., SC where he had his own family As a matter of interest CBS believes this John Faulk also was the father of Richard Faulk and John Faulk Jr who lived in Washington Co Georgia and perhaps of William Faulk who was a Patriot in Union Co., SC. After the Revolutionary War South Carolina adopted the policy of forgiving all Loyalist who swore allegiance to the State of South Carolina and the new United States Government. The attitude of people in Edgefield County was unforgiving as many Loyalists were killed and their property confiscated. There is a long document in the Library of Congress in which many Loyalists in South Carolina made a claim through the English Government for compensation dues to actions of the Patriots. So Jonathan Faulk went to the north eastern part of South Carolina where he secured a land grant on the District of Georgetown on the northeast side of the Little Pee Dee River. This land wasn't too far from his cousins Richard and Phillip Faulk who lived in Bladen (now Columbus Co NC) near the present town of Fair Bluff. One of Richard Faulk's deeds was witnessed by Jonathan Faulk and CBS believes he is the Jonathan Faulk who was the Loyalist soldier who later lived on the Little Pee Dee River. Living near Richard Faulk was a family of Tillmans and CBS believes Jonathan married Phoebe Tillman. CBS doubts Phoebe Tillman was a widow. CBS also thinks she was born about 1762. John Tillman Faulk was born in 1784 in North Carolina so Phoebe must have decided to have her delivery near her parents rather in the swamps of the Little Pee Dee River valley. The area where Jonathan Faulk lived was about as sorry as it comes so Jonathan must have been looking for a better place. So the next time we pick up Jonathan Faulk is in 1806 when he applied for a passport in Wilkinson Co. Georgia. The signers of the request state they "knew the said Jonathan Faulk for going on two years" and that he was a "good citizen". Why did Jonathan decide to leave Wilkinson County? The answer lies in his son John Tillman Faulk. On 1 September 2020 John Tillman Faulk shot and killed Mary Horn in Montgomery County Georgia. The warrant against John Tillman Faulk was sworn to by Wilson Horn, The Corner's jury found John Tillman Faulk "did kill the said Mary Horn". But in some way John Tillman Faulk was aquitted by the court. John Tillman Faulk had been a school teacher in Montgomery County but it must have been time for him to leave. So the Jonathan Faulk family went through the Creek Indian nation to Natchez Mississippi and west to Jonesville. Jonathan and family including John Tillman Faulk now married to a fourteen year old Martin girl from Natchez settled on land one and three tenths miles south of Troyville now Jonesville LA on the west bank of the Black River. In "Jonesville, Through the Mirror of Time" Vol II December 1978 is an article about Llamanda Plantation, "The orgiinal Llamanda was owned by John Faulk who sold it to St John R LIddle prior to the Civil War. Jonathan Faulk died in 1811 and was buried in a family cemetery. CBS had a distant Faulk cousin living in Harrisonburg. Her husband told CBS that he worked for the Louisiana Highway Department and that he was on a road building project along the west bank of the Black River south of Jonesville. He stated that they had uncovered an abandoned cemetery where the new road was constructed. CBS believes that is where Jonathan Faulk is buried. Eleanor Faulk Cone noted that in 1829 a John Tillman died in Ouachita Parish LA. His estate was administered by John Dyson and John T Faulk. EFC wondered if he might be the father of Phoebe Tillman. ------------------------------- JONATHAN FAULK GEORGIA PASSPORT State of Georgia Folk, Jonathan Wilkinson County Whereas Jonathan Folk know being a citizen od said County know having a mind tp travel threw the Creek Nation to the Western Country and wishes a paffort from his Excellancy the Governor, we the under subscibers of Wilkinson Co ounty have been well acquainted with the said Folk going on two years an have Never known any other than a good citizenof State and County where he lives. AN OVERVEW OF JOHN TILLMAN FAULK In my (Charles B. Schweizer) (CBS) opinion John Tillman Faulk was born 26 December 1784 in then Bladen now Columbus County NC near present town of Fair Bluffs. Other records indicate he was born in 1782 and 1785 but this is not unusual, people didn't remember. He was probably born at his materal grandparents home where he could receive medical care. We next find him charged with murder in Montgomery Co GA where he was acquitted in October 1805. Considering the evidence (see below) his acquittal is a miracle. In the trial John Tillman Faulk was listed as a Schoolmaster so he must have received a good education as he grew to manhood. The following year, 1806, his father Jonathan Faulk living in nearby Wilkinson County GA applied for a passport to travel through the Creek Indian Nation . The application states the witnesses knew Jonathan Faulk going on two years which means he must have arrved about 1804. He was twenty three years old but the marriage was a success. About 1810 Jonathan Faulk and John Tillman Faulk settled on a plantation on the west bank of the Black River about a mile south of present Jonesville LA. John Tillman Faulk engaged in making salt from the Sabine River. On one of his trips to market, a robber gang on the Black River extracted a toll on his load of salt. John Tillman Faulk enlisted in the Louisiana Militia for the War of 1812 and was one of twelve men wounded in the Battle of New Orleans. For this he drew a pension the rest of his life and it probably helped him financially. In 1816 he moved up the Black and Ouachita River to buy land south of present Monroe LA. He owned quite a bit of land before he died in 1871. He is buried in the Faulk family cemetery at Logtown also known as Fondale where he lived. He had four wives and fourteen children. His last wife was Kesiah Faulk daughter of 'Black' James Faulk and Elender Penelope Shepherd 'Nellie', a widow of Francis S Howard, and his fourth cousin. He and his descendants have always been active members of the Methodist Church. VETERAN OF THE WAR OF 1812 During the War of 1812 and Louisiana threatened by a British Invasionin late 1814, John T. Faulk became part of Declouet's Regiment, Louisiana Militia in Catahoula Parish as a private in Captain R.L. Sackett's Co., 15th Reginemt. The company made it to the Louisiana capital in time to participate in the famed battle of New Orleans. Faulk was wounded by a gun shot through the left thigh and was discharged 3 Feb 1815. By the Louisiana Legislative act of 7 Jan.1819, he received a pension of $8.00 per month. Later with the passage of several Federal Statutes awarding pension and bounty lands for veterans of US military service, he applied for his rights. With his application papers, he included an affidavit from fellow soldier John Carroll who stated that their unit was marched below New Orleans near English Turn on the Mississippi River in October and remained there until 24 Dec. 1814. A large portion of the British army landed opposite them on the east side. A party of British took up quarters in a big frame house on the night of 6 Jan. 1815. Capt. Sackett called for 25 men to cross the river and give a fight to the enemy in the house. John T. Faulk and John Carroll were two of the 25 volunteers.
Faulk was sent to spy out the position. When he reported, he was sent a second time with orders to shoot a supposed sentinel. As he tried to comply with the order, be was seen by his enemy and got himself shot. He was so near the enemy fire his clothes caught fire from ensuring shots exchanged between friend and foe. One source stated that John Carroll carried Faulk to safety. However, another source noted that Faulk was wounded during the nightbattle of 28 Dec. 1814 and was found by John Kitterlin who "took himup in his arms" (Faulk being a small man) and removed him within the lines in safely. Mr. Faulk never knew his preserver until 1842, wherein Mr. Ketterlin stopped at his house on his way up (from Catahoula Parish) to the land office at Monroe to secure his land. While there, upon talking over past events and recurring to the battle of New Orleans, the discovery was made of their former opportune meeting, when their delight was mutual, and both brave men clasped hands in life-long friendship.
It was later told that Faulk's wound in the left thigh from a musketball was so large that a surgeon drew a silk handkerchief through it to clean out the powder. From that injury, he was crippled for the remainder of his life. He as all others of his unit was honorably discharged on orders of General Andrew Jackson at their encampment below New Orleans.
He is listed in Ancestory.com's Military Records: War of 1812 Muster Rolls as a Private in Declouet's Regiment, Louisian Militia. He is also listed in the Alphabetical Index to Veterans of the War of 1812 by the Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society. There is another listing in the War of 1812 Muster Rolls for a Private George Faulk from Baker's Regiment of Louisiana Militia. George Faulk was a son of Luke Faulk, a line that moved from Pensacola Florida to southwest Louisiana and whose relationship to the Monroe Faulks is unkown. She never returned to Ligtown and isburied in the same cemetery as Lucretia in Athens Texas. It is reported that this letter is mounted on parchment and its page 2 cannot be xeroxed and has to be read through the back with a strong light. They following is courtesy of Karen Everritt, West Monroe, Louisiana: This is a copy of letter written by J. (John) T. Faulk: 'La. Ouachita 18th of November 1866..." Why this long silence between you and me wife and children? I feel this day quite well in health and I now see fit to tell you from whence our family sprang and of the stock of people from which we came. We came from Europe according to the words of our forefathers. In 1671, there was a province on the river Rhine, it lies between Germany and France; there was a large number of that province, that protested against the Roman Catholic order of religion who were called by way of reproach Hughenot Protestants." "The Pope of Rome ordered them all to be exterminatd and on St.Bartholomews night, twelve thousand of the Protestant Hughenots were treacherously massacred and many more hunted up and tortured to death. All that refused to renounce the Protestant faith and return to the Romish mode of worship, were put to death. The persecution became so terrible against the Protestant Hughenots, that quite or nearly all were destroyed from the Rhine province. A number of hard battles were fought. Finally the Hughenots found their case hopeless and many of them fled to America to find a land of peace and quiet." "The ship that brought them landed at Wilmington on the coast of North Carolina, which was then only a few houses, now a city of N.C. Well with that Ship's company, there were three brothers, names thus- James Faulk, Right Faulk, and Melzer Faulk. These three brothers all raised families and their familes, no doubt raised families. Now from these three brothers sprang a numerous number and have given the name to not a few. I have seen many of the names and all that I have seen, if he had been careful to inform himself all can trace their origin back to the Hughenot brothers. And now my boys you need not be ashamed of your origin. I am satisfied that all the Faulks now in America, sprang from one or the other of these three brothers. The record says that all of the Faulks who were in the Rhine province were put to death, but these three brothers: all for the sake of Protestant Christian faith. Mind you, these protestants were of the Lutheran faith. Luther was the first successful reformer in his time: and after the dark ages of the world." "Now in conclusion, allow me to admonish and beg of you, to not fail to make sure work for the salvation of your souls. Pray earnestly to God to enlighten your understanding, read often the Holy Bible and testament. They will point you out the way to heaven. Read them to your mother, brother and sister, the same I say to all of you. Let us try to meet in heaven, Shall we know each in that happy place? Yes, surely we shall be made known to each other it would give me much delite to see you but if you will not come to see me we shall not meet in this world for I am too feebel to undertake the journey to you. Tell me, do you keep any or all of the balck people with you and if so on what terms do they stay with you? Do you give them a share of the crop or do you pay monthly wages to them? I say keep them if you can fairly. Tell me does your grandmother yet live and how is her health? Tell me of your Aunt Jane and hers, how they are doing? Tell of your Uncle Kendrick of him and his. Have you yet a school near you? /s/ J T Faulk To Keziah and I will fill this blank the second of Nov 1866. Thetwenty sixth of this month Jonathan is my birthday. I do wish you could be with me on the twenty sixth of this month to eat a birthday dinner with me. Can it be soe? Rite to me and let me know how you arfefaring and what you are doing and what your prospects are? Tell me what you intend to do. Tell me do you keep the mill and gin in working order or has it gone to decay? I hope not, I paid much money to William Faulk for it and the land. Take good care of the land and cause it to pay you well". CBS Comment: Dispite what John Tillman Faulk wrote no one has been able to substantiate the story of the three Faulk brothers from the Rhineland, the area around Wilmington NC was a wilderness inhabited by indians and there is no Huguenot record of these three brothers. The Faulks in Athens Texas laughed at James Jonathan Faulk's book saying 'CousinJimmie' wanted very badly to be a member of the Huguenot Society but was unable to do so. CBS Comment: The references listed under Jonathan Faulk are also applicable to John Tillman Faulk. References: Carol Ann Lane, 880 San Pedro Ave, Carol Gables FL 33156 wrote 24 Sep 1990, Your letter said that you had been to the old Faulk farm. Do you mean Belmont in Ouachita Parish? If you do, I have an old survey done by a DAR chapter in the area (the Logtown cemetery) of that cemetery. Many of those graves have been vandalized. The road is still in the same place, but many of the markers are no longer there, so the survey made by the DAR is quite valuable in my opinion. Buried there is John T Faulk. His tombstone reads 'Born in Bladen County, North Carolina December 26, 2020 - November 5 1871 died in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana'. Very truly yours, /s/ Carol Ann Lane EXTRACT OF LETTER OF jOHN TILLMAN FAULK TO JAMES J FAULK Logtown Post Office, Ouachita LA Sept 1 1867 "Mind this place is my residence and the same place that I have lived on for the last 33 years and the same place you and Alfred were born on. I suppose (Al)fred has to work now in the field, well his father worked in the field before he was born, yea and I lived better before I ever owned slaves. They have been a curse to the South." J T Faulk OUACHITA PARISH LAND RECORDS On Oct 23 and 30 OF 1967 Fannie Faulk Munholland and I, Nell HayesFaulk, researched the records in the Clerk of Court's office in Ouchita Parish. We found records that John T and Aquilla Faulk (brothers) bought 400 arpents (an arpent was a little less than an acre) of land lying on the east side of the Ouachita river on August 23, 2020 for the sum of $1,200 from Felicity, widow Lamy, now the wife of John R Dewitt.(Conveyance Book D page 151). I counted 87 tranactions made by John TFaulk. JOHN TILLMAN FAULK HONORED A talk given 9 April 2021 at gravemarking ceremony at Faulk Cenetery, Logtown, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, just south of Monroe, on the Ouchita River by Mrs Gene Flourney Stack. The ceremony honoring John Tillman Faulk, a War of 1812 veteran at the Battle of New Orleans, was sponsored by the Govenor William C C Claiborne Chapter, US Daughters of 1812. A bronze marker placed by John T Faulk's grave was unveiled and dedicated. Over 55 descendants and friends were present. Excerpts from Mrs Stack's talk. My grandfather left it (letter of John T Faulk to son James Jonathan Faulk) in his papers and my Mother, Mary Faulk Flourney, inherited it and now it has come down to me, and I treasure it highly. I keep it in the old Faulk secretary along with the old Faulk books which have always been kept in this secretary. Of course many of them bear other names-- such as Rush, Williams, Turnley, Morris, those who have married into our branch of the Faulk family. Some of the books have old flowers pressed into them, old ribbons, newspaper clippings. There has been no room in the secretary for any other books for over 80 years so when I open the glass doors of the secretary I go into books that the Faulks have read for over 150 years. These would not be all of the Faulk books just the ones that our branch of the family has held onto and added to down through the generations. A fourth source of information came from DeBow's Review, Vol 12 of 1852. This gives an account of John T Faulk as an early settler in Catahoula Parish and tells of his service in the War of 1812. Obituary of Robert White Faulk (courtesy of Charles Schwiezer) (no name for the newspaper publisher provided)... "Robert W. Faulk was born October 7, 1838, and died, at his residence on the Ouachita river, below Monroe, February 16, 1873. He was the son of the venerable and widely known John T. Faulk - after whom Faulk's chapel is named - and brother of John C. Faulk, who died a member of the Louisiana Conference. From his childhood he was a lover of Jesus and a professing Christian. He led his household to the Master, and was truly known among them as a 'priest unto God.' He felt himself thoroughly identified with the church in its every experience of joy, sorrow, bereavement and labor. Never, to bless her sons, was voice or hand denied. Nothing but personal sickness ever vacated his place in the congregation. The preacher now will feel bereaved, as he stands in the sacred desk, of appreciation, sympathy and love; nor there only, for his heart was always open to the cares, fears and anxieties of his pastor. He was peculiar, but his angularities were conscientious - the result of convictions attained by processes and from a standpoint purely his own. This gave his manner at times the appearance of abruptness and harshness; but it was appearance only, for his heart was full of generous, delicate and tender sympathies. Conspicuous among other noble qualities was his liberality. An instance recurs: In 1870, as a member of the board of stewards, he made the assessment on himself, in view of his embarrassment, but in the winding up of the year his crop exceeded his expectations, and he voluntarily increased his subscription $50.Gratitude formed no small element of his beneficence. During the last few years he ripened rapidly for the kingdom, and death neither took him by surprise nor gave him alarm. The habit of trusting the Savior was too frequently exercised and firmly rooted to be shaken by such an event. To his soul, fully armed and strong in recent and numerous triumphs, the last enemy came as an insignificant reptile that was crushed by his mailed heel. The church and community participate with his family in their sense of bereavement. The resurrection of the good is precious to us all, but each saint we bury intensities the eagerness of our hope to join our loved ones in heaven. Faulk's Chapel, March 21, 1873."
