The Penny Coat of Arms, according to Burke's 'The General Armory' (1884, page 790) was granted in Peterborough, Northampton County, England in1574. It consists of 'Ermine, two greyhounds courant, per pale gules and sable (another shows the greyhounds reguardant). Crest: On a ducal coronet argent, a lynx or..' which means 'on a shield entirely covered with ermine fur, appear two greyhounds running, the one centered on the left hand side is tinted red; and the one centered on the right hand side is tinted black. Resting on a ducal coronet painted silver, is a lynx painted gold.' The motto has been translated to mean 'I hope in adversity, and fear in prosperity.'

James Penny came to America with his father in the spring of 1775, settling into Pennsylvania. He had been in the colonies just for a year and was only 14 years old and a half when he enlisted in Captain James Morrison's Company of the 3rd Battalion in the militia of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (unproven at this time).

His name appears also on a roll of Captain James Clark's Company of the 6th Battalion under the command of Colonel James Taylor 1780 (this has been credited by the Daughters of the American Revolution in a letter dated January 18, 2021 and is also referenced in the Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Volume V, page 707).

Soon after the war he ventured to Louisiana and bought land along with John Carltey at Fort Bute on Bayou Manchac. They sold the land the same year. According to 'American State Papers', 1834, Volume 3 by Duff Green James Penny was already in Louisiana by 1785. He received two land grants from the Spanish Governors of Louisiana (as it was owned by Spain in 1785) and began cultivation in 1785. Governor C. de Grandpre granted him Section 89 which amounted to 105 acres. He also was granted Section 71, which had 426.15 acres, by Governor G. de Lomas. This tract was 'cultivated until 1811'. This is the same tract where his home was located and where he is buried.

He first lived in a one-room log house and later built a lovely, large house that stood on high pillars. He appears as a head of household in the 1820 census with a total of 7 white males, 6 white females and 21 slaves. Thirteen years later, the 1831 tax list reveals that he had better than 1800 acres, and owned 31 slaves. In his will he equally divides his property among his seven children (James Jr had already died) as well as freeing two loyal slaves, Harriet and Lucy, and 'shall build them a comfortable cabin, give them a bit of land to work during their lives and treat them kindly..'. He later freed Sam, another slave and 'charge my children never to sell Dick out of the family'. He is buried on what was was the site of his plantation near Zachary, Louisiana with his wife, Nancy.

He was honored by the Long Leaf Pine Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution from Shreveport, Louisiana and the John James Audobon Chapter of the DAR from Baton Rouge with special tombstones and a bronze marker on the tomb, as the only Revolutionary War soldier buried in Louisiana. There is an article in the DAR Magazine (December, 1961 edition, page 697) describing the dedication ceremony and luncheon with the Governor of Louisiana and mayor of Baton Rouge after the ceremony. The author of this history's sister, Sharon Ann Fox Cruse, participated in the ceremony. The tomb is near the site of the old Penny mansion under a massive (sixteen feet around) live oak tree named the Henry Watkins Allen oak, that in 1935 was listed as one of Louisiana's largest.

The plantation passed to the J. W. Decker family around 1935-36. The ceremony for the grave markers was September 9, 1961. The directions to the small graveyard under the large tree are: go North from Baton Rouge on Highway 61 about 9 miles to the Magnolia Church, turn left on Carney Road, go 1/2 mile, turn right (North) and go 1/2 mile to the cemetery.

Joseph Penny's daughter, Zula, described him 'as a kind, quite man, who was very religous'. He was married twice. The first marriage was filled with domestic problems and during his second marriage he suffered financial problems. He was well educated and taught his children long passages from the classics which he loved and could recite with great feeling. After the Civil War he moved to a large plantation ('Safety Dale') southeast of Ambrosia and there his second family was born and raised.

His two marriages produced 19 children. At the time of his marriage to Ann Carl, he was 40 and she was 20-22. He 'was a planter and like most of the planters raised, ground and refined his own sugar cane'. In 1880 life was very hard for the family. He would, for a small fee, show area farmers how to make sugar. One of his sons hunted in the 'devil swamps' for meat. Earlier, the 'Yankee soldiers had taken everything and then came the carpet baggers.' At the time of the birth of his last child, Zula, he was 58 or 59 years old and later lost his eyesight in his older years. The home he had lived in was dismantled around 1935.

Zula recalled that 'she attended the old Presbyterian church near our home. My father took her there because he never forgot that we were Scottish Covenanters'. He taught her Scottish history and Scottish songs.

Zula Willemena (named for the Queen of the Netherlands in) was born onher father's plantation 'Safety Dale', near Zachary, Louisiana. She 'was proud that one of her brothers, James Smiley Penny, had joined the Confederate army at 13 and served to the end. Her two fighting brothers were dubbed the 'Black Pennies' because of their toughness in pulling through hardships'. She received most of her education from her father who had lost his eyesight in his later years. He would take the children into the yard under the large shade trees for their lessons'. Zula 'pointed out that were no public schools after the Civil War, so it was through Joseph and his sister-in-law, who used a room in her father's large house for a little school, that she obtained an education. When Zula was only 17 years old she was appointed to teach in Port Hudson. She said 'I had to pass a written examination to qualify, but I passed with high marks, a credit to my father's teaching'.

She was a long time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (her National number was 185029) having joined in 1922 and was a member for 44 years until her death. Her obituary on May 16, 2020 contained 'Mrs. F.E. Morgan Sr., 97, died Friday in a Ruston hospital after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Morgan was the last surviving granddaughter of the American Revolution, her family said. She had also been a member of Trinity Methodist Church since 1896 (68 years). Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Spears Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.'
